There are 52 million unpaid family caregivers in the United States, with some 40% of those caregivers providing high-intensity care, per AARP’s 2025 report on caregiving. Additionally, 70% of these caregivers are employed, meaning 36.4 million family caregivers are balancing caregiving, work, and their other responsibilities. Caregiver wellness, as a result, directly impacts the outcomes of their care receivers. Despite this, caregiver wellness is often overlooked, even with the long-term implications of neglected caregiver wellbeing for both caregiver and receiver. Avanlee Care seeks to provide a solution to the caregiver wellness crisis with the Avanlee app.
Wellness Surveys
The first line of support for caregiver wellness in the Avanlee App is our wellness surveys. Wellness surveys empower caregivers to share their struggles in caregiving with a wellness team in a data-driven, success-oriented improvement plan. Wellness Surveys are based on an evaluation called the Caregiver Strain Index. Caregivers take a simple 13-question survey, designed to be taken more than once (even weekly) to keep tabs on how they are doing mentally and emotionally as a caregiver. Upon completion, an overall wellness score will be added to a wellness chart, and caregivers are provided with improvement areas where they can learn strategies for coping with the complexities that come with caregiving. Caregivers can then add support team members to their wellness journey, who share weekly reports on improvement plans, struggle points, and share their wellness journey in an honest and convenient way. In sharing their struggles with another person, caregivers have an outlet for frustrations, anxieties, and concerns, as well as a source of accountability and support in improving their mental health. In improving their mental health and finding a support source, caregivers can experience benefits not only in their own mental health but also in their own caregiving abilities. While caregivers continue to pour from their own empty cups with success, reducing caregiver burnout, improving mental health outcomes, and improving care quality are all results of improving caregiver wellbeing and should be a top priority.
Caregiver Education
According to AARP, over 40% of unpaid family caregivers provide high-intensity care (eg, providing injections, managing complex medical conditions, and managing equipment), yet only 22% of these caregivers receive any caregiving education. To provide support for overworked and undersupported caregivers, Avanlee provides a resources section in the Avanlee app. The resources section is a one-stop shop for all things caregiver support and education. Caregivers can have their caregiving questions answered and learn more about being a caregiver and the nitty-gritty admin details associated with caregiving. Improving caregiver education can result in better health outcomes for care receivers and can lighten the mental burden on caregivers of finding what gaps in their knowledge might exist. The Avanlee App empowers family caregivers to improve their caregiving education and provides a comprehensive, quick-start guide to caregiving. It seeks to better support unpaid family caregivers and ensure better health outcomes for care receivers.
Wrapping Up
Supported caregivers make better caregivers. When we provide emotional support and education to unpaid family caregivers, they in turn, can provide better care to their aging loved ones. With 52 million Americans providing unpaid care and another 36.4 million of those balancing a job, family, and caregiving, providing education and support should be our highest priority. While supporting caregiver mental health is never done, the Avanlee App provides caregivers with a way to start working on their mental health and education in an easy-to-digest, pocket-sized solution.
